This poem and accompanying illustration arose as a meditation on presence: not as an idea to chase, but as a place we can arrive. In the meeting of Polar Bear and Panda Bear—north and green, silence and laughter, endurance and gentleness—we are reminded that love does not live in some distant “someday.” It lives in the warmth between us, in the moment we choose to stay.

Ima Koko (Here, Together)
In the old tongue of the heart,
before maps and borders learned their names,
there was a word the Bears kept close:
Ima Koko—
here, now, the place where breath remembers itself.
Polar Bear came from the white silence,
carrying the north wind in his fur,
each step a vow to stay present
even when the ice sang of endings.
Panda Bear rose from the green hush,
bamboo-light laughter in her eyes,
rooted in valleys where patience grows slow and kind.
They searched for each other
across lifetimes and latitudes,
missed by inches, by centuries, by fear—
until the world finally softened
and said, arrive.
Ima Koko, they whispered,
foreheads touching,
meaning:
I am not yesterday’s wound.
I am not tomorrow’s worry.
I am the warmth between us
right now.
Around them, the myths leaned closer.
Mountains exhaled.
Rivers slowed their storytelling
to listen.
Even time sat down,
took off its crown,
and became a simple circle.
Bearz learned then
that forever is not a distance—
it is a practice.
Panda knew
that healing does not rush—
it stays.
So they built no kingdom but presence,
no throne but the shared ground beneath their paws.
When storms came, they said Ima Koko.
When joy overflowed, they said Ima Koko.
A compass word.
A sanctuary sound.
And the legend says—
wherever two souls choose each other
without leaving the moment,
you can still hear it echo
like a soft bell in the chest:
