I Will Not Become the Fire
A Bearz Signal Field Note
There comes a point when you realize the world is constantly inviting you to become the very thing you oppose.
Cruelty asks you to become cruel.
Hatred asks you to hate.
Fear asks you to build walls.
Noise demands more noise.
And fire, inevitably, asks for fire.
I’ve spent enough time wandering through this strange human experience to know how seductive that invitation can be. We watch people hurt one another. We witness greed dressed as success, domination disguised as strength, division sold as belonging, and fear packaged as truth.
Something inside us wants to fight back with the same weapons.
But somewhere along the road, I began asking a different question:
What if refusing to become the fire is itself an act of resistance?
That question became part of the philosophy behind Bearz Signal.
It isn’t about being passive. It isn’t spiritual bypassing, looking away from injustice, or pretending harmful actions don’t matter.
Quite the opposite.
Love can have boundaries.
Compassion can say no.
Peace can stand its ground.
You can recognize the sacredness of another being while refusing to participate in the destruction they create.
That distinction matters deeply to me.
The Ronin
The Polar Bear Ronin emerged naturally as a symbol of this philosophy.
A ronin traditionally belongs to no master.
My Bearz version belongs neither to the machinery of fear nor to the tribes demanding unquestioning allegiance. He walks through the landscape observing, questioning, creating, listening.
His sword isn’t raised.
That matters.
Strength is present, but it doesn’t need to advertise itself through violence.
The Bear sits between two worlds.
Behind him is the machinery of fear: control, consumption, conformity, corruption, violence, greed, endless repetition.
Ahead lies something quieter.
Mountains.
Water.
Trees.
Coffee.
Gardens.
Music.
Art.
Friends.
Truth.
Love.
Not paradise.
Just life returned to human scale.
And above everything stretches the cosmos—a reminder that our furious little divisions are occurring on a tiny rock traveling through an incomprehensibly vast universe.
Perspective can be medicine.
The Signal
There is also an old radio in the image.
That may be the most important object of all.
Because Bearz Signal was never supposed to be a broadcast telling people what to think.
It is a transmission saying:
Remember.
Remember your humanity beneath the identities.
Remember curiosity before certainty.
Remember that another human being is more than the worst thing they’ve done.
Remember that resistance does not require hatred.
Remember that this planet does not belong exclusively to us.
Remember wonder.
Remember kindness.
Remember how strange and improbable it is that any of us are here at all.
Maybe someone receives the transmission.
Maybe nobody does.
The signal goes out anyway.
Across mountains.
Across borders.
Across loneliness.
Across time.
Across whatever enormous cosmic night surrounds us.
The Fire
“I Will Not Become the Fire” grew from a simple realization:
I want to love everyone regardless of the characters they are playing in this unfolding cosmic drama.
That doesn’t mean I condone everyone’s actions.
It doesn’t mean allowing abuse.
It doesn’t mean remaining silent.
It means I refuse to give another person’s hatred authority over the condition of my own heart.
I can oppose what you do without denying what you are.
I can say enough.
I can close the gate.
I can protect someone from you.
I can stand against you when necessary.
And somewhere beneath all of that, I can still recognize the same mysterious spark of existence looking through your eyes that looks through mine.
Perhaps you’ve forgotten it.
Perhaps I sometimes forget it too.
That’s part of being human.
But forgetting doesn’t make the sacred disappear.
One Sky
For all our flags, borders, religions, parties, possessions, algorithms and carefully defended identities, there remains only one sky above us.
One planet beneath us.
One astonishing experiment called life.
I don’t know exactly what this cosmic matrix is.
I’m increasingly comfortable admitting that.
But I know how I want to move through it.
I want to protect what is vulnerable.
Question what demands obedience.
Create more than I consume.
Listen before assuming.
Keep wonder alive.
Feed people when I can.
Make music.
Grow things.
Sit beneath trees.
Drink good coffee.
Love fiercely.
Draw boundaries without constructing prisons inside my heart.
And when the world places another match in my hand and whispers,
Burn them back,
I want to remember that I still have a choice.
I can put the match down.
Not because I am weak.
Because the fire ends somewhere.
Why not here?
Why not with me?
So the Polar Bear keeps watch beside the old radio.
The frequency remains open.
The little amber dial glows against the enormous night.
And somewhere beyond everything we think separates us, the transmission continues:
Resist what harms.
Protect what is sacred.
Love remains.
The signal finds its way home.
